skate. - Straight and Wavy Hairstyles

On skate I was responsible for the look development and pipeline creation for all of the different hair types that you see inside of the game.

The shorter hairstyle shown here was one of our earliest hairs that I used in order to lock down the sculpted style we ended up pursuing for our straight, wavy, and loosely curly hair types. This work helped us achieve a good understanding on how we wanted to approach straighter, flowing strands of hair, connections into our head to avoid the 'helmet' effect sometimes seen in sculpted hair styles, and shorter, cropped hair that is longer than a buzzcut but shorter than the flowing strands seen on the top of the style. With this work we fully locked down our three-step sculpting process, were able to refine our optimization goals for our low-poly meshes on all future hairs, and successfully identified our preferred cloth-simulation approach for shorter hairstyles.

This work then went on to be used as a stylistic reference for every straighter, shorter hair you see in the game today, as well as a final in-game model.
