skate. - Braids, Twists, and Locs

On skate I was responsible for the look development and pipeline creation for all of the different hair types that you see inside of the game.

One of the biggest things I wanted to make sure we tackled on skate. was ensuring we provided proper, authentic representation to a variety of hair types in the game. A large part of that work was creating a unified look to all of the protective styles we wanted to create in the game.

In order to do this, I developed a "template" approach to an assortment of traditional protective strand types, namely braids, twists, and locs. Each type of strand had its own uniquely sculpted high-poly that was then converted into a tilable low-poly system so that artists could create any type of hair using the same styled strands. We then paired this template strand approach with uniquely sculpted haircaps that suited the specific parting styles we wanted to use for each hair asset. By combining these two approaches of template and unique work, we could quickly but also authentically represent a wider range of hairs that both looked and performed consistently.
